Having been there and knowing how it feels to be in charge, and the responsibility that it brings, I can empathise with the financial and emotional challenges. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of getting ground down by people issues and lose sight of the goals of the business.

What I’ve noticed when working with my clients is that their troubles stem from either not wanting to be in charge, or not having the know how to lead a team or a combination of both. There is an adage that says leaders are born not made, which is nonsense. Anyone can learn to lead a team, they just need to decide they want to.

Not wanting to be in charge is often linked to a focus on other things, or in other words it is way down the list of priorities and subsequently it is done badly or not at all. We tend to focus our time on what motivates us, so if managing people doesn’t motivate you and something else does, then that’s where your focus will be.

If not addressed, a lack of focus on leading, managing and developing your team will lead to the problems of having an unhappy, disengaged and unproductive team. Your time will then be taken up dealing with low morale and you’ll wonder why you bothered employing people at all.

I’ve combined my own experience of these problems, and some tools and techniques I learnt since selling my business, to create a solution which will give you what you need to get the M.E.A.S.U.R.E of your business. The starting point is establishing what you want from your business so you can create the role that suits you and then build everything from there.
